A rare gilt bronze figure of Tara
Nepal, 12th Century
Finely cast standing in tribhanga on a cylindrical double-lotus base, her right hand lowered and her left raised to hold a stem, her full rounded face with fine aquiline nose and pursed lips beneath the gently slanted brows and third eye, flanked by large beaded earrings and surmounted by a foliate tiara and an elaborate topknot, with tresses of hair trailing to curly tips at the shoulders, adorned with beaded armlets and a necklace with pendent jewels, wearing a diaphanous sanghati falling in elegant pleats to an undulating hemline and finely incised with floral patterns, a scarf draped over her left arm
