Lot Essay

A drawing comparable in subject and technique is in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin, E. Pagella and L. Piovano, 'Bernardino Lanino tra Manierismo e Conformit', op. cit., 1989, p. 164, illustrated. Other comparable drawings are in the Albertina, the Biblioteca Reale, Turin, the Uffizi, Florence, and the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, A. Quazza, op. cit., pp. 284-9, illustrated.
Lanino painted a number of pictures of the Madonna and Child enthroned, sometimes in the company of saints. The central section of a large altarpiece, dated 1565, showing a similar Madonna and Child seated under a curtain, is in Campiglia Cervo. Another, dated 1539, at Borgo Sessia shows the enthroned Madonna and Child with saints crowned by angels, as in the present drawing, P. Astruo e L. d'Agostino in 'Bernardino Lanino maestro a Vercelli: opere e committenti', op. cit., 1989, pp. 91 and 83, illustrated.
