An attribution to Callisto Piazza has been kindly suggested by Jak Katalan, who compares the drawing to one exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum, New York, Sixteenth-Century Italian Drawings in New York Collections, 1994, no. 49 and to another from the Malcolm Collection in the British Museum, London.

A.E. Popham noted in the Skippe catalogue of 1958 that 'The ascription by Skippe to Gambara has been almost entirely erased. There must have been some basis for the not very obvious attribution of this fine drawing to Gambara'.
