Lot Essay

A study for the winged figure over the right arch of the Loggia of David in Palazzo Te, Mantua. The decoration, now lost, is recorded in a drawing executed by Ippolito Andreasi after the Loggia, A. Belluzzi and K.W. Forster in Giulio Romano, exhib. cat., Palazzo Te, Mantua, 1989, p. 333, illustrated. Andreasi's drawing is in the Kunstmuseum, Dsseldorf, with a large number of copies after Giulio Romano. The same figure is found to the left of barbarians in a modello in the Louvre for the lost garden faade of the Palazzo Te, F. Hartt, Giulio Romano, Yale, 1958, no. 211, fig. 164.
