The attribution was kindly suggested by Nancy Ward Neilson, who adds that this was done in emulation of the head studies drawn by Ercole's uncle Giulio Cesare Procaccini. The large group of drawings by Ercole in the Accademia in Venice shows the same use of chalk in curly lines, U. Ruggeri, Disegni lombardi, Milan, 1982, nos. 123-8.
Similar heads by Giulio Cesare and Camillo Procaccini, Ercole's other uncle, are also in the Accademia, U. Ruggeri, op. cit., nos. 114-7 and 81-4. Giulio Cesare's heads are all executed in three chalks and are more finished than the present drawing.
