Lot Essay

Possibly related to The Ecstasy of Saint Francis in the Louvre or to the Madonna in the Assumption at Philadelphia, E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony Van Dyck, Dsseldorf, 1988, II, nos. 665 and 690. The verso is probably for the last communion of a saint: compare with the verso of lot 95 of this sale.
The style and technique, black and white chalk on blue paper, resemble that of many of Van Dyck's portrait drawings and the study for a Lamentation in the British Museum, C. Brown, Van Dyck Drawings, London, 1991, no. 50.
