This drawing contains studies after antique coins, and two unconnected foreshortened figure studies. Delacroix visited the Cabinet des Mdailles at the Bibliothque Royale, now Biblithque Nationale, in 1824-5. From the copies he made there, he produced six lithographs of groups of coins, all dated 1825 (Delteil 42-7). Most of these coins show profile heads, but some also full-length figures, such as the one in the center of the present drawing. The lower left head on the drawing could be the upper right one on Delteil 44, and the upper right one the upper left in Delteil 47. The two other sheets included in this lots are also after antique coins.
Other drawings after coins are in the Louvre, M. Srullaz et al., Dessins d'Eugne Delacroix, Paris, 1984, no. 1253-7.
