Lot Essay

Other drawings of the same technique and size, showing the same model whose face is recognizable by the very marked eyebrows and wide forehead, are in the Louvre, J. Guiffrey and P. Marcel, Inventaire gnral des dessins du Muse de Versailles. Ecole franaise, Paris, II, 1908, no. 835,838-9, all illustrated. Bouchardon although a Professor at the Academy rarely taught there. He was known as a sculptor but regarded by all connoisseurs, especially Jean-Denis Lempereur and Pierre-Jean Mariette as an exceptional draughtsman. He published in 1738 Livre de diverses figures d'acdemies dessines d'aprs le naturel.
