Lot Essay

The drawing was exhibited at the Salon of 1771 under the description 'Deux Dessins faits d'aprs Nature au Chteau d'Amboise', Explication des peintures, sculptures et gravures de messieurs de l'Acadmie Royale, Paris, 1771, no. 88.
This drawing was executed by Fragonard just after his return from Italy, which he left on 24 July 1765. On 26 July 1766 he was elected Acadmicien of the Acadmie Royale and could exhibit at the Salon, held every other year. It was quite exceptional that an artist be granted the title of Acadmicien without having been first agre.
