Very little is known about Angelo Maria Costa and few examples of his work remain to assist in reconstructing his oeuvre. Born in Palermo and trained in Naples where he was imprisoned for theft, he moved to Milan in 1714. A signed view of the Colosseum, Rome, (Senate House, University of London) with the same elongated figures and extenuated forms suggests he stopped in Rome on his way there.
The present paintings attest to the Neapolitan influence of Leonardo Coccorante and Gennaro Greco to whom several works by Costa have been variously attributed. These include a pair of capriccio seascapes offered at Phillips, London, Dec. 12, 1997, lot 206.
