Lot Essay

In private correspondence (October 13, 1998) Mimi Cazort suggests an attribution to the rare artist, Carlo Bianconi (1732-1802), who was an exact contemporary of Gaetano Gandolfi, and, like him, a pupil of Ercole Lelli (1702-1766). She cites the pale palette, soft contours of the drapery and eloquently drawn hands as typical of the work we know by this artist, whose time was spent more in literary pursuits than in painting.

We are grateful to Dr. Mimi Cazort for suggesting this attribution on the basis of a photograph.
