Lot Essay

This ravishing, unpublished painting has the size of a modello, but may have been intended as an independant painting. Its handling and drawing are of the utmost delicacy and it has a carefully finished surface; furthermore, no larger version of the composition is recorded.

A late work from the artist's final decade, the picture is signed and dated on the reverse of the canvas, which is unlined. Gaetano's younger brother Mauro Gandolfi employed this painting as the basis of an etching which was considered among his most prized, as Donatella Biagi Maiano noted (in correspondance): his print was published by A. Zanotti in the re-publication of the autobiography of the painter in Il Commune di Bologna, June 1925, II.

Our thanks to Donatella Biagi Maiano and Mimi Cazort for confirming the attribution of the painting to Gaetano Gandolfi on the basis of photographs; Dr. Biagi Maiano will publish the painting in a biography of the artist to be included in the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, and Dr. Cazort will include it in her forthcoming book on the Gandolfi.
