An Italianate Landscape with an imaginary view of a grand Staircase and Figures in a formal Garden

Although Baur is better known for exquisite miniatures and prints, several paintings are also recognized as by the artist. The present painting is among this group, and can be compared to the View of the Villa D'Este, Tivoli in a private collection, Rome (see L. Salerno, Landscape Painters of the seventeenth century in Rome, 1977/8, II, p. 465, no. 74.5), a second version of which was offered at the Dorotheum, Vienna, Nov. 7, 1991, lot 65; and to a View of the Villa Borghese, Rome, in a private collection, Montreux (ibid., p. 463, no. 74.2).
