This portrait -- like its pendant which depicts the sitter's wife, Jeanne Marie Goret de Grandriviere (whereabouts unknown) -- is signed and dated 1718 on the reverse of the original canvas; the inscription is now concealed by the relining canvas. The style of the portrait is perfectly characteristic of Largillire's works from the period 1715-20.
