Mr. Sylvanus Groves was the English factor for Mr. Samuel Galloway,a successful businessman from Tulip Hill, Maryland and they both arranged to exchange portraits of themselves and their wives, possibly when the latter was in London in 1755 (J.R. Kelley, op. cit., 1965), which coincides with Reynolds's recorded sittings for both Mr. and Mrs. Groves, on July 29, August 1, 22, 26 October 3, December 27 and January 2 of the following year.
