Lot Essay

An old label on the reverse reads 'Portrait of George Rush painted by Opie in 1805'. This is, therefore, presumably the painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1806, no. 129. Opie also painted portraits of Sir William Rush (1750-1832?) and Lady Rush.
