In a letter dated Antwerp, May 10, 1993, Dr. Hans Vlieghe writes of the present lot...'the quality [of the present painting] does not seem to be inferior to the signed and dated one at Rijkhoven.'

Lot Essay

The present painting is a variant of the Deposition in Rijkhoven, Belgium, in the glise de la Nativit de Notre-Dame. Dr. Vlieghe has published the date of the Rijkhoven painting as 1658; it is actually 1650.
