Lot Essay

Several versions of this composition are known to exist. Van Loo's Portrait of Philip V in the Prado, Madrid, (Inv. no. 1.865), and that at Versailles (Inv. no. MV 4378), have both been considered prototypes for the group. The present work, and another attributed to van Loo (sold at Christie's, London, Dec. 11, 1992, lot 336), follow the portrait at Versailles. In this work the sitter is depicted holding his baton with his hand at shoulder height, rather than with the lowered position of his hand in the Prado picture.
