Lot Essay

This panel would have formed the top of the central caille of a large retable of the type prevalent in the north-eastern region of Spain during the 15th century.

The composition is based on models from the late period of Jaume Huguet, but in its execution it is closer to the Aragon master Martin Soria. The richness of the woodwork around the composition is more characteristic of the region of Aragon than Catalua. This work is datable circa 1470.
