This picture formed part of the Spanish Gallery of King Louis-Philippe of France. One of several versions, with differences, the present work can be added to the group of paintings of Saint Jerome executed by Zurbarn's studio including canvases in The San Diego Museum of Art, Museo de Bellas Artes, Sville, and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Mlaga.

Benito Navarrete Prieto, curator of the exhibition Zurbarn and His Workshop, has confirmed the attribution of this picture based on photographs.
