Schwerin, 1954, n0S389/90, where the sitter in the second portrait was erroneously identified as Sophie Charlotte, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, née Von Hessel-Kassel (1678-1749), thus leading to the false conclusion that the portraits are to be considered pendants.

Lot Essay

For information on the first sitter, see the note to lot 6.
Isabella Angelika was the second wife of Christian Ludwig I, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1623-1692), whom she married in 1664. Another portrait of her, by an unknown French artist, circa 1670, is in the Castle Schwerin (E. & J. Borchardt, Mecklenburgs Herzöge, 1991, p.75, ill.). The second picture is possibly after a lost original by De Troy, of which the pendant might have been the portrait in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
