with inscription on the reverse of the unlined canvas erroneously identifying the sitter as Countess Franziska von Hohenheim (1748-1811), who married Duke Carl II Eugen von Wurttemberg (1728-1793) in 1784.

Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of Friedrich, Count of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and married Carl II Eugen, Duke of Württemberg (1728-1793) on 26 September 1748.
A version of the present picture is in the Castle Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart, inv. n05354 (see A. von Pfister, Herzog Karl Eugen von Württemberg und seine Zeit, I, 1907, pp.52/53, ill.).
