and a Portrait of a noblewoman, said to be Regina von Stein, née Schad von Mittelbiberach with her four daughters Euphrosina von Maldeghem zu Stotzingen, Elisa, Margaretha Ursula and Anna Regina, standing small full lengths as donors in a draped portico, inscribed with the names of the sitters on a scroll and with a coat-of-arms centre left, by an unknown German hand, circa 1700, probably after a lost original of circa 1590 (2)

Lot Essay

The history of the family Schad can be traced back to the 12th century, when they were recorded in the area of Ulm and Günzburg. The patrician family was raised to peerage in Vienna on 22 May 1651, and from then on bore the name Schad von Mittelbiberach.
