We are grateful to Ludwig Meyer for pointing out that the sitter is to be identified as Friederike Caroline, Markgräfin of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1735-1791), daughter of Franz Josias, Duke of Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld. She married Christian Friedrich Carl Alexander, Markgarf of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1736-1806) in 1754. L. Meyer dates the present lot to circa 1754.

Lot Essay

The sitter has not been identified. Her first name if likely to start with initial T, since the chair and the dog's collar are both inscribed with this letter. On the table beside her are two crowns: one is her Kurfürstliche crown, the other appears to be royal. These crowns and the order of the sitter may be connected to her being a Habsburg Queen.
