This pair of elegant fruitwood commodes was probably executed in Munich, where Count Carl Leopold of Maldeghem almost certainly purchased a large number of pieces following his move to Schloss Niederstotzingen in 1821 or after his marriage to Countess Maria Theresia of Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzbach in 1823. These commodes do not have any particular painted or inlaid decoration which links them to a specific Munich workshop, although their tops are flush with the under-lying drawer-section which is a characteristic feature for Bavaraian chest-of-drawers. (G. Himmelheber, Biedermeier 1815-1835, Munich, 1989, p. 208)
Similar designs for Commoden are illustrated in M. Wölfer's Modell- und Musterbuch für Bau-und Möbel-Tischler, Leipzig, 1833, T. 62.
