Lot Essay

Count Carl Leopold of Maldeghem probably acquired large amounts of furniture in Munich following his move to Schloss Niederstotzingen in 1821 or after his marriage to Countess Maria Theresia of Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzbach in 1823. This little canape was among these acquisitions and is embellished with black penwork decoration, a technique which was developed and perfected by the celebrated Munich cabinet-maker Johann Georg Hiltl (1771-1845).
