The Montelbaans tower is one of the few early 16th Century buildings that remain today. The lower section of the tower, which was located just beyond the city wall was built in 1512. When in 1611 the tower began to list the citizens from Amsterdam attached ropes to the top to pull it right again. The canal in the foreground is the 'Oude Schans'.
