Lot Essay

"...a distinguished artist from the Spanish colony of painters in Rome, a painter of historical genre who does not paint history. What seduces him, what inspires him, are not events but everyday life. He creates genre works while keeping an eye on the past and keeping in tune with the period". (c. Gonzalez and M. Marti, Spanish Painters in Rome (1850-1900), Barcelona, 1988, p. 202).
Salvador Sanchez Barbudo started his career copying Seventeenth Century costume and cavalier scenes in the Prado. At the age of 25 he moved to Rome where he frequented the studio and used the models of Jose Villegas (1848-1921).
Specializing in scenes from the past in which noble women, knights and cardinals were situated in luxurious boudoirs, Villegas considered Barbudo his best disciple and he was a favorite of the dealers and the foreign visitors. His ornamental and highly detailed works appealed particularly to the English market.
