Salvador Sanchez Barbudo started his career copying Seventeenth Century costume and cavalier scenes in the Prado. At the age of 25 he moved to Rome where he frequented the studio and used the models of Jose Villegas (1848-1921).
Specializing in scenes from the past in which noble women, knights and cardinals were situated in luxurious boudoirs, Villegas considered Barbudo his best disciple and he was a favorite of the dealers and the foreign visitors. His ornamental and highly detailed works appealed particularly to the English market.
