Typically Sicilian, this type of raised gessoed scrolled decoration known as pastiglia was very often on a japanned polychrome ground with painted foliate and floral motifs, on this commode the decoration differs slightly it is painted to simulate kingwood veneer. However, the typical shape of our commode, and especially the scalloped apron and short cabriole legs terminating in hoof-feet is reminiscent of a commode sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 29 September 1990, lot 289, while another similar commode is illustrated in E. Baccheschi, Mobili Italiani del Meridione, Milan, 1966, p. 68, and another slightly different shape was sold at Sotheby's New York, 22 May 1993, lot 265.
