The original picture from which this is taken was painted by Romney in 1784 (see H. Ward and W. Roberts, Romney, London, 1904, pp.136-7). Anna Russell (1763-1814) was the eldest daughter of Sir Charles Whitworth, and married, as his second wife, Henry Russell, a member of the Supreme Court of Justice in Bengal, in 1782. Her husband, who Romney also portrayed, was later created a Baronet in 1812. Her eldest son Henry was born on 27 May 1783.
