In 1309 Pope Clement V settled in Avignon, a fief of the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily, being reluctant to journey to Rome owning to the problems encountered there by his predecessor, Boniface VIII. He was succeeded by six French popes, two of whom, Benedict XII and Clement VI, were responsible for the construction of the Palace depicted here.
