The sitter bears close resemblance to Charles-Alexander (1712-1780), Duke of Lorraine, who married in 1744 Archduchess Maria-Anna, Empress Maria-Theresia's younger sister who died in the year of the marriage. He was also the brother of Emperor Francis Stephen, Maria-Theresia's consort. A General Governor of the Austrian Netherlands, he became High Master of the Order of the Teutonic Knights.
