Prior to acquisition by Mr. Alexander von Vegesack, the chair had been purchased by the husband of the Sotheby's vendor from a member of the Uiterwaal family, Utrecht, Holland. When originally offered for sale in XXXX, Mr. H.J. Uiterwaal confirmed to Sotheby's that the chair had been executed by Cees Uiterwaal, who was a cabinetmaker and close friend of Rietveld. It was stated that Rietveld especially made the design for this chair for the Uiterwaal family and that according to a member of the family only four examples were executed.
