Lot Essay

The provenance of the picture from Heydon Hall is of interest in that it's possible descent within the Bulwer family eventually leads back to the staunch parliamentarian Erasmus Earle (1590-1667) who acquired the estate in 1650. In 1648 he had been appointed Oliver Cromwell's counsel, thus making the present picture an appropriate addition to the collection of pictures at Heydon Hall.
