Lot Essay
The present work appears to be another version of At Albury, sold at Christie's, 28 January 1988, lot 150 (see Robert Chignell, The Life and Paintings of Vicat Cole, R.A, 1896, illus. facing p. 65, and Timothy J. Barringer, The Cole Family: Painters of the English Landscape 1838-1875, 1988, p. 76, fig. 10. Vicat Cole often painted replicas of pictures for disappointed patrons who had missed purchasing his original pictures, although it is unusual, as in this instance, for the second work to be larger. As Vicat Cole's ledgers are incomplete between 1858 and 1870, a precise identification is impossible.
