Lot Essay

The present work would appear to be a study for Leader's Royal Academy picture of 1869 (no. 201), the whereabouts of which has been unknown since 1893. If it is indeed this study then it was the work sold by the artist to his friend Sir Arthur Robert Collier, Attorney General, for £5 in November 1870.
We are grateful to Ruth Wood for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry. She will include the present picture in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Leader.
