Habiti Antichi et Moderni di tutto il Mondo, in Latin and Italian, Venice: Giovanni Bernardo Sessa, 1598. 8 (173 x 110mm.), title within elaborate arcitectural woodcut border, colphon with woodcut printer's device within architectural border, separate section title to plates within architectural border, 501 full-page woodcut costume subjects, 5 views of Venice, woodcut initials and head-pieces, printer's device at the end (title stained and with laminated repairs to outer and inner margin, lower margin crpped, inprint on title scored and on colophon, some staining to a few plates, a few text leaves trimmed at upper margin), modern calf binding, spine in gilt compartments, red morocco lettering piece, gilt ruled margins, g.e. This second and most complete edition of Vecellio's encyclopedia of costumes, expanded from the first edition of 1590, contains 87 more subjects than the first edition, including 20 of American costumes (Peruvian, Mexican, Virginian and Florida indians). Cesare Vecellio (1530-1606) was a nephew and pupil of Titian and, it is thought, was assisted by him in the design of the illustrations. The blocks were cut by Cristoforo Chrieger. Many of the subjects appear to be based on manuscript or printed sources, for example those of Nicolas de Nicolay and Pieter de Coeck.
