The standing figure simply carved with arms held at the sides and hands appearing to be inserted into conical jars or baskets, wearing heavy robes with pushed-up sleeves, the face with soft features set in a smiling expression, traces of black, red, blue and pale green pigment

Lot Essay

This figure appears to be related to other stone figures of laborers sculpted in Sichuan, such as those excavated from a tomb in Leshan City, Sichuan, and illustrated in Wenwu, 1993:1, pl. 6, including fig. 5, which illustrates a similar standing figure carrying similar jars. These blocky figures are all related to the more familiar pottery figures of entertainers and laborers, also made in Sichuan.
