A WELL-CARVED LONGQUAN CELADON DISH

The convex center carved with a scaly, five-clawed dragon prowling amidst clouds within a frieze of lotus scroll in the well, covered overall with a glaze of sea-green tone continuing over the shallow foot onto the base where an unglazed circle burnt orange in the firing encircles the concave center

Two dishes of this size and pattern were included in the exhibition, Chinese Ceramics, Dusseldorf, 1965, Catalogue, nos. 87 and 88; and another of larger size (16in.) in the Percival David Foundation is illustrated by Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, London, 1958, pl. 92.
