AN EARTHENWARE VASE
meiji period (late 19th century), signed dai nihon hekizan zo and with kao and with shimazu mon
Of ovoid form moulded from above the splayed foot to the base of the neck with overlapping lotus leaves, each with pointed tips and in high relief to the body of the vase and painted in colored enamels and gilt with stands of chrysanthemums or phoenixes within stylized borders, the neck decorated in red, blue and gilt with a band of floral lattice and with a collar of elaborate flower lappets below the rolled lip, the foot encircled by a narrow band of fretwork in red and gold enamels
