The present models relate to a print published by Jacques Androuet Ducerceau, circa 1560, representing sphinxes and a mythical sea beast, as used in the celebrated Sea Dogs table at Hardwick Hall. The design is reproduced in S. Jervis, Furniture Design Before 1650, Furniture History Society, 1974.
