Lot Essay

Although the decoration and overall form of this armchair is most usually associated with Venetian examples, the distinctive outline of the back and detailing of the carving possibly point to a Genoese origin. Related Genoese chairs are illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Mobile in Liguria, Genoa, 1996, p. 234, and L. Canonero, Barocchetto Genovese, Milan, 1962, fig. XXIII. The interlaced crescents on the crestrail are probably those of a family crest.
