cf. Aymer Vallance, "British Decorative Art in 1899, and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition. Part II." The Studio, Vol. 18, 1899, p. 128 for an illustration of the plaque. See pp. 130-131 for discussion on Solon's work. In the "Black Cat", the artist experimented with firing on opaque enamels. Also, to achieve the faint ornament on the wall behind the female figure, he partially applied acid which ate away the glaze and then rubbed color into the recesses of the area. Solon enhanced the panel by outlining the colorful decoration in gold or by accentuating the many details.
