The Ex-Briggs Cunningham
1961 MASERATI TYPE 63 V12 ENGINE

Engine No. 63010

Engine: V12, 2989cc, 320bhp at 8500rpm.

The successor to the Tipo 61 Birdcage of 1960 combined the Formula 1 V12 engine, already tried in the 250F, in an almost identical intricate tubular 'Birdcage' chassis. Unlike the earlier cars the engine was now rear-mounted, and accordingly the bodywork differed to clothe the chassis as aerodynamically as possible.

Initially two cars were built in this configuration, both for Briggs Cunningham, and debuted at Le Mans in 1961. This engine on offer was originally installed in the first of the Cunningham owned chassis, 63010. At some stage the engine was switched with that of a Maserati 150S also in the Cunningham stable, and when the present owner acquired the 150S he removed the V12 from that car.

The Ex-Cunningham Birdcage engine is sold in largely complete order and is fitted with 6 Weber 38 IDM carburettors, and twin Magneti Marelli twelve-cylinder distributors. It is unknown when it was last run, or whether it has been rebuilt.
