The Excel arrived in 1985 as the last of Lotus's long line of front-engined high performance luxury coupes. This generation began with the Elite of 1974, representing a determined move up into a more luxurious market sector with a full four-seater, using the company's by now well-developed backbone frame and the usual glassfibre body. In due course it was supplanted by the Eclat, virtually a rather lighter, fastback two-plus-two seater version of the Elite with revised styling from the doors back.

When introduced the Excel was first presented as merely an Eclat variant, enabling the costly process of Type Approval to be avoided. But it was rather more than that. Styling was updated and made a little more aggressive, the interior, with plenty of good leather, plus some quality wood finish around the instruments, was clearly aimed at the hedonist. Under the skin the suspension was improved and ventilated disc brakes fitted. These, in common with much else in the drive-train, came from the Toyota Supra Coupe, on which Lotus had worked as
