Woven in wools and silks, depicting an ostrich hunt with various hunters on horseback attacking ostriches, to the foreground a large ostrich surrounded by three dogs and two hunters with spears, in the middle distance with a further ostrich and a hunter attacking it, in the back ground with two or three further ostriches surrounded by dogs, within a open wooded landscape with buildings and a hilly landscape beyond, within a flowerhead-filled foliate guilloche border and a later blue out slip, areas of reweaving and patching, reduced in height at the top
8 ft. 6 in. x 11 ft. 9 in. (267 cm. x 358 cm.)

Lot Essay

A tapestry panel depicting an identical ostrich hunt, but not including the figures to the right of the central hunter on horseback is illustrated in J. Boccara, Ames de Laine et de Soie, Saint-Just-en-Chausse, 1988, p. 187, while a further similar ostrich hunt scene was sold Vigo Sternberg, Sotheby's London, 29 February 1996, lot 16.
