Moses ascended Mount Sinai and received two tablets of stone with the ten Commandments. While he was absent the Israelites fashioned out of their gold ornaments an idol in the form of a Golden Calf which they placed on an altar. When Moses returned he destroyed the calf and in rage at their idolatry broke the two tablets. He later returned to Sinai to receive two new tablets from God.
