TWO PAIRS OF GEORGE III HALL CHAIRS
One pair mahogany, the other pair walnut and mahogany
Each with a pierced oval wheelback with gadrooned lambrequin finial, central oval and lappeted spokes, on a pierced pinched support, above a dished panelled seat, on ring-turned tapering legs joined by a spindle X-shaped stretcher, two chairs stamped 'RE', the other two stamped 'WR', restorations, one back leg spliced (4)

Lot Essay

These hall chairs, with medallion backs in the manner of a pattern illustrated in Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. LXX, relate to contemporary designs in Gillows of London and Lancaster's Estimate Sketch Book (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillows Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 255).
Four related chairs, with central painted monograms, were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 19 March 1990, lot 64, and a pair, with central crests was sold on behalf of the Michael Winch Will Trust, Boughton Monchelsea Place, Kent, Christie's South Kensington, 21 January, 1998, lot 7.
