A pattern for a related medallion-back chair, with central sunflower, appears in Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 6. The same patterned back appears on a chair of the 1780s at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (see M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, p. 135, no. P/12).
A set of seven chairs, with similar backs, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 5 May 1988, lot 62.
