Lot Essay

A related antique-fluted and golden brass-ringed plate-basket at Culzean Castle, Scotland, is likely to have formed part of the dining-room furnishings introduced in the 1780s at the time that the architect Robert Adam (d. 1792) was aggrandising the castle for David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassilis (d. 1792) (see C. Musgrave, 'Culzean Castle', The Connoisseur, March 1972, p. 165). Another, with bacchic lion-masked handles and tripod paws, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 9 April 1981, lot 43.
